South Side Lions Club
The Club was chartered in 9-2-1942.
There has been the Lions home of many prominent business people and politicians.
The first female president of the club was elected in 2006.
A fiberglass lion was commissioned years ago and stood in Hyde Park as a fountain until it was vandalized and put into storage. For many years, its location was unknown until a current member located it and another member restored it to its former glory. Now it has its own trailer and is taken to the annual Pancake Days and displayed in the South Side Fall Festival Parade. In 2014, a plaque was attached “Dedicated to the Memory of Lion Bill Chaney 1950-2014”.
Lake Contrary has also had a shelter house dedicated to Lion Bill Chaney and has a sign to honor him.
Lion Bill Chaney was a licensed enucleator and worked with the eye banks in Missouri.
We annually participate in the Soles for Christ shoe drive to benefit children in St. Joseph.
We annually ring the bell and man the kettle in East Hills to support the Salvation Army.
